What is Carbon?
Coal, wood, coconut shells, peat, and lignite are natural raw materials rich in carbon. These carbon-based substances can be converted into activated carbon through high-temperature treatment. At JY Corporation, we primarily use coconut shells to produce high-performance, eco-friendly activated carbon.
What is Activated Carbon?
Activated carbon is a highly porous adsorbent made by treating carbon-rich raw materials at high temperatures. There are two primary methods of producing activated carbon: • Steam Activation At around 1000°C, steam reacts with the carbonized raw material, creating countless micropores on the carbon surface. • Chemical Activation A chemical agent, such as phosphoric acid, is mixed with the raw material and then heat-treated to produce a uniformly porous structure. The key characteristics of activated carbon include its large surface area, porous structure, and excellent adsorption capacity: • Large surface area: 1 gram of activated carbon has a surface area of 500–1500㎡, equivalent to the size of 2 to 7 soccer fields. • Porous structure: Contains pores of various sizes, which are essential for its adsorption performance. • Outstanding adsorption: Through the adsorption process, where molecules from gases or liquids diffuse into and adhere to the pores, activated carbon effectively removes impurities and pollutants.
Where Is Activated Carbon Used?
Activated carbon is widely used across many industries, including: • Water purification: household water filters, wastewater treatment, drinking water refinement • Air purification: air purifiers, industrial gas removal, odor elimination • Metal recovery: extraction and refinement of precious metals like gold and silver • Chemical and pharmaceutical industries: purification, decolorization, antidotes • Food industry: sugar refining, flavor removal Beyond these, activated carbon is increasingly utilized in deodorization, decolorization, environmental protection, and energy storage.
